Racquetball Tips and the Rules of Racquetball

Racquetball can be played in three different ways. Versions include Singles Play (between two players), Doubles Play (between two teams of two players), and Cut Throat, which involves three players. Tournament play usually includes either singles or doubles play. Regardless of the type of game, these are the basic Rules.

The game starts with the server standing in the service zone and passing the ball to the opponent. To serve, the server must first hit the ball and then hit the racket. The ball is put into play after first touching the playing wall and then passing to the back half of the field. In its flight, the ball may hit one side wall, but not more. If it touches three surfaces before bouncing, including the ceiling or the back wall, the serve is no good (called a fault) and the ball is out of play. Also, a serve that does not go beyond the short line of the service zone is not good (fault). Also, when attempting to serve, the ball may not touch the side wall, floor, or ceiling before the playing wall. The server is given two chances to put the ball into play. If the server commits two consecutive faults, the returning player takes his place in the service zone and the original server assumes the return of the service position.

To return the serve, stand in the middle of the court (equal distance between each side wall) about a hand and racket length away from the back wall. Returning the serve by hitting the ball before the second bounce. The ball must go to the Play Wall to serve well. If the ball hits the play wall before bouncing, the ball may hit ANY surface other than the floor from which it bounced.

Rally

Once the ball is in play, each player takes turns until they miss the ball or make an illegal shot. Players try to score points or win a serve by finishing the rally. This is often done when a player’s shot hits the front wall at its lowest point, causing the ball to roll out of bounds rather than back into the court (called a killshot or rollout). Points are also awarded when rallies end in a foul or a “Skip,” meaning the ball hits the floor before reaching the wall.

Once the ball is in play, the wall and ceiling can be used for shot variations. Points are scored when the server wins a rally after serving the ball. If the player returning to serve wins the rally, the result is a sideout, no points are scored for either player, and the player who wins the rally serves. Whoever wins the rally always serves the next one. Matches are usually two games to 15 points and, if necessary, a tiebreaker to 11 points.

Obstacles are a stoppage of play, leading to a replay of the point. It is your responsibility to give your opponent enough space to hit the shot the way they want. You have to draw them directly to the front wall, as well as to the corner, which will lead to crossfire in the opposite back corner. Common obstacles: the ball hitting any part of the court, resulting in an irregular rebound (vents, door handles, lights, etc.), the ball accidentally touching an opponent while heading towards the front wall, unintentionally touching an opponent. trying to play on the ball, checking the opponent’s look at the ball or passing the ball between the legs. Basics to remember once you start playing the game: Only the server scores points, the ball can only bounce once, the ball must return to the front wall after being hit.

Some powerful tips for playing a great racquet: A dominant center court allows you to capitalize on every mistake your opponent makes. On the center court, you have maximum scoring opportunities from effective shots and you can easily cover your opponent’s best shots. However, sometimes you have to give up center court. The rules state that you must always give up your position to give your opponent a fair chance to hit the ball. Also, two of the best shots that allow you to control center field are the ceiling ball and the pass or down the lane. Both of these defensive shots require your opponent to move into the backcourt to return the ball, allowing you to move to center court.
