Yes, Jesus Christ Shares Sacred Secrets With Certain Trusted People

Come with me and turn your New Testament to Luke chapter 8. We read of Jesus Christ wandering through various towns and villages, and what does he do wherever he goes? He proclaims the good news of the kingdom of God. Jesus Christ is King. He moves physically and geographically. He changes the places for preaching and teaching, but he does not change his message.

The Kingdom of God – where Jesus Christ is King – is a place of safety, security and assurance. The twelve were with him—they would learn as they heard, watched, and observed. There were also some women who followed Jesus – some of whom were healed and delivered from evil spirits. They contributed their money to support and finance the work and ministry of Jesus Christ.

Jesus was so pure and holy and perfect and sinless, that he would allow these women to be around him wherever he went – without any rumours, whispers or suspicions behind his back. Of all the real criticisms leveled against Jesus there is not a hint or suggestion of impropriety anywhere. His morality—his holiness—his purity in the eyes of the Father was never questioned.

One day a large crowd had gathered and Jesus began to speak to the people –

“A farmer went to sow his seed – while sowing some fell on the path – the path was hard – the seed could not penetrate – and the birds came and ate it.” Jesus was teaching in the village by this lake. He was in a horseshoe-shaped bay at the water’s edge. He is facing a sloping area, which has perfect acoustics.

All around were fields. Everyone knew what the situation was. They could recognize what Jesus was saying.

Verse 6. Some seeds fell on a rock. Now there were, and still are, many rocks in those areas. I have examined them on various visits to the Galilee. There would be a little soil covering the rocks – the young plants had sprouted – but they had no place to put their roots. Soon they dry for lack of moisture.

v 7. Some seed fell on thorns and thistles – whatever grew was soon suffocated.

v 8. Another seed fell on good soil – it grew and bore fruit. The fruit was 100 times more than what was sown – that’s a high yield.

Then Jesus cried out to the people – “Are you listening? Are you really listening? Are you paying attention?” Jesus said – use your ears – listening is hard work.

That’s all he said! Now, study it carefully. We must carefully study every part of the scriptures to grasp what God is really saying. Most of Jesus’ parables are short. That’s all he gave the crowd. But this does not satisfy the disciples. “What does that mean? What is it all about?”

Be prepared to ask good questions. These eager disciples wanted more than just a story—the whereabouts of the children. They wanted Jesus to teach them. They wanted a little meat. Milk – soaps – was not enough for them.

Jesus begins to explain and this is the only place where Jesus Christ explains and develops and expands on his basic message.

v 10. You may understand the mystery of the kingdom of God. Jesus Christ is ready to share with us what we love – the Holy Mysteries. Others will never really see—never really understand—and they must be content with children’s addresses. But to these people – and to those of us who really want to know – Jesus is willing to explain and develop and expand the basic message – so that we can understand its meaning – the hidden meaning.

But this happens only after you ask the question. Remember – many of the letters we have in the New Testament are the result of questions raised – problems raised – the situation of a particular fellowship. These people did not sit down to write the Bible!

v 11. Planting the seed, and explaining what it means, is the most important part of my work, and that is what I have tried to do in these studies. The seed is the word of God. This seed can come to life. This seed has potential. These are more than black spots on white paper. It is the seed of God.

What gives rise to this question? Were these people a little frustrated with the way things were going? Brother John also had questions and reservations about how things were going and what was happening. Crowds were coming, but very few were actually listening and paying attention. And this word separates the curious from those who really want to learn. Listening is just as important as preaching—hearing what God has to say. The land is as important as the seed. And, Jesus begins to teach those who want to learn.

The seed – with all its potential – must penetrate the heart before any life can spring forth. We should not expect quick results. We are farmers – not manufacturers on a production line. Jesus teaches that the word falls on hard hearts. If there are too many things that trample that heart—too much running—too many commitments—too many irons in the fire—always having to be involved in something—too much effort and movement—all that can be done is to trample it all. A person’s heart and to harden it. Seeds need space to rest and germinate. So at the end of the fellowship meeting, we have to be very careful about what we say. We can easily distract people from what Jesus said.

v13. Some seeds fall into the heart like stones. Yes – there is soil – enough to show a little of life. But that feeble plant is growing in a small layer of earth.

There is nowhere for the roots to go down – adversity comes – trial comes – and the initial response withers and withers. Some give up and quit and get lost.

Jesus says – they fall away. “No thanks—I’ve had enough—I want no more—though it comes from You, Jesus, Son of God.”

v14. Some hearts grow seeds for a while. It can look very good. Some people can really impress you – nice healthy plants. But the filth and filth in their hearts has never been cleansed—not really. Soon weeds begin to grow, and they can take over, and these growing weeds can choke out promising life. Something comes and grows—something that must be uprooted—too many demands—too many places—too many cares—wealth—pleasures. Prosperity can lead a man astray, and such a life never bears fruit. The initial growth was intended to produce fruit in the proper season.

Jesus is leading – any fruit? Are there consequences? Do you sometimes wish this question had never been asked? The answer is so detailed and so relevant.

The word also finds a good foundation. The Word finds the hearts and minds of men and women who are open and unprejudiced – willing to receive – willing to teach – and ready to obey – and determined to cultivate their faith – allowing it to grow and blossom and mature – like a seed. Gave all the encouragement to grow.

Jesus is talking about quality – reliability – perseverance – patience.
