However, it is a sad fact if you consider the number of preventive measures available to handle these unfortunate situations. Unfortunately, it is the essence of suicide that makes it difficult for you to actually protect your loved ones.

In rare cases, a person may not have any signs or symptoms before committing suicide. However, making a consistent effort to spend time with people you care about can make you more attuned to warning signs that others easily ignore.

A person is at high risk of suicide if they have any of the following signs or symptoms:

• Talking, thinking or writing about suicidal thoughts – even if it’s only occasionally.

• Making a conscious effort to obtain the means to commit suicide, for example stocking up on pills or buying a gun.

• Exhibiting behaviors that indicate social withdrawal, such as spending too much time alone or not interacting with other people.

• Having extreme or occasional mood swings for unexplained reasons.

• Thinking or talking too much about issues related to violence or death.

• Acknowledging that they feel frustrated or trapped by a particular situation in their personal life, school or workplace.

• Increased consumption of drugs, alcohol, nicotine or any other substance abuse.

• Sudden and unpredictable changes in their regular routines, such as their sleeping patterns and eating habits.

• Taking sudden and many unnecessary risks in your life, such as reckless driving, gambling, drug use or unprotected sex.

• Writing their last will, making arrangements for how their assets will be disposed of if they are gone or given away for a legitimate cause.

• To say goodbye as if leaving for good or going away.

• Exhibiting major personality changes as well as stress and anxiety or a severe inability to cope with normal life.

It’s always best to play it safe when it comes to people who may be at risk of suicide. If you have any reason to believe that a loved one is entertaining thoughts of harming himself or herself, you should contact the appropriate authorities about it. Be sure to share your concerns with other people so they can see your loved one as well.

If you are personally at risk of suicide, there are proactive steps you can take to prevent it. The coping strategies below cover this in more detail, but here are some key points to consider.

• Talk to a loved one or close friend about what you are going through. Have the courage to be completely honest about your situation.

• Talk to a spiritual counselor if you feel it might help your situation.

• Seek professional help.

Possible causes of suicide

It is difficult to ascertain the exact cause of suicide. However, a surprising fact is that genetics may be related to suicide. Some studies show that there may be a genetic component to suicide. If you have a history of suicide in your family, this may also put you at risk for suicide. This is not meant to warn anyone who may find themselves in this particular situation. Rather, it is meant to empower people to be aware of any potential risks. Being aware of any potential risks can be very empowering. In other words, once you know that there may be a potential risk, you are able to equip yourself with the necessary coping skills and strategies mentioned below.

Here is a list of situations that commonly act as triggers for suicidal thoughts or actual suicide attempts.

• Do you feel lonely, socially isolated or hopeless about your life?

• Has something particularly stressful happened in your life recently that you just can’t deal with? Examples of this include, but are not limited to, losing a loved one, engaging in your first combat as a military officer, breaking up with your partner, being diagnosed with a serious medical condition, finding out you are bankrupt, or becoming an individual. There are special factors to consider if you are concerned about children or teenagers committing suicide.

• Does your child have any type of mental or psychiatric disorder, diagnosed or not?

• Is your child in trouble because of a troubled relationship with a family member or close friend?

• Is there any history of abuse in your family?

• Has your child been a victim of any type of drug abuse?

• Is your child pregnant?

• Is your child likely to have an STD or some type of sexually transmitted infection?

• Is your child suffering from bullying or discrimination?

• Does your child seem to have a problem with his sexual orientation?

Suicide and murder

Sometimes, what you have to watch out for is a tendency or the possibility of killing a loved one. In that case, suicide can also happen. Unfortunately, this type of tragedy happens all too often. The amount of pain it causes is immeasurable. But this can be avoided if people are taught how to deal with rejection and failure. If a person has not developed coping skills and life gives them a bad shock, things can sometimes take a turn for the worst. When people cannot cope and if they are left to their own devices, tragedy usually follows. Everyone needs help at some point in their lives. Some of the major problems that can lead to suicide are as follows:

• Relationship problems, such as extramarital affairs, sexual abuse, and problems with control and jealousy.

• Financial problems, such as bankruptcy, an unexpected increase in rent, or discovering that you have lost a large sum of money on your investment.

• Legal problems, such as learning that you may have unknowingly committed a crime or that you are being sued by someone else.

It is a sad fact that there are even certain types of prescription drugs that count depression as a potential side effect. If you or a loved one has no choice but to take this type of medication, you should be extra aware of any unusual actions, behaviors or thoughts.

Inform a friend or family member if you are taking medication that may alter your personality. Someone from the outside looking in, so to speak, can spot the signs that something isn’t right before you do.

Below are some key strategies you can use to help yourself, a friend or family member. This only touches on the subject, so I would encourage people to do more research on the subject through the internet, books and self-help groups. Remember, knowledge is power!

• Do nothing now. You may be in a lot of pain, but try to distract yourself from your thoughts and actions. Being depressed and thinking about suicide is completely different from actually doing it. It’s the depression and stress that makes you think in ways you normally wouldn’t. Give yourself a chance. Tell yourself you’ll give it another day or a week just to give yourself a chance to think instead of acting.

• If you are taking drugs and/or alcohol, suicidal thoughts may be stronger. These substances will change your natural way of thinking. I have no doubt that many people have taken their own lives while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drugs and alcohol only add to the problems people face. The world is a very different place when you are sober. Reality can be hard sometimes, but it’s the only reality we have. And we can live in this reality if we give ourselves the chance. There are ways to face and overcome our problems.

• Identify situations that trigger feelings of hopelessness or suicidal thoughts. It can be the upcoming anniversary of the loss of a loved one, excessive alcohol or drug consumption, and the stress of breaking up a relationship or struggling with your sexual identity. Of course, there are many other reasons, but the most important thing is to be aware of your triggers. Being honest with yourself can lift a huge weight off your shoulders and help you avoid these triggers in the future.

• The nature of depression or suicidal feelings means that a person wants to isolate themselves from society and everyone around them. Due to this fact, it may seem difficult to recover things, but this is not true. Even if you don’t want to or don’t feel like talking to people you know, there are crisis help lines that people can use to talk about their feelings. Remember, we are social creatures, and trying to go it alone is never a good idea.

• Try to build a support network for yourself. Keep phone numbers handy in case you need them. Always keep someone a phone call away. This could be your family doctor, friend, family member or crisis line. When all else fails, a crisis line can be your salvation. Remember, you are never truly alone because crisis lines are available 24/7. People who volunteer their services won’t be on the other end of the line unless they care. People care about other people, so you’re not alone.

• Take care of yourself. What you eat and drink and how much fresh air and exercise you get are very important. I can tell you that fresh air and just a short walk (which is free by the way) goes a long way. Even a basic deep breathing exercise can put you in a different mindset. • It is important to remember that nothing ever stays the same. I understand that it can be hard to admit when you feel depressed or suicidal, but it’s true. When life hits us hard, it takes time to recover. After all, we are only human. We have to give ourselves a chance. One small step at a time is the key to achieving anything big. Taking it too soon is not a good idea. When a small child first begins to learn to walk, it falls many times. But no matter how many times a child falls, he keeps getting up until he can stand on his own feet. Life does the same thing when we get older, but remember, it’s never the same unless we pick ourselves up and keep going. No matter how many times it takes!
