When You Have No Successes to Report
How do you measure success? Do you see it as winning big contracts, promotions and salary increases, awards and impressive letters of appreciation or are you happy with a simple ‘thank you’, knowing that you did a good job? Or maybe more free time is your vision of success.
It’s easy to lose sight of the fact that some people measure success as getting out of bed in the morning, washed and dressed. Yes, medals, certificates and accolades are all well and good but moving from a low point to a successful end result requires real courage and determination.
Indeed, every day cannot be a great success and every day does not witness great achievements and newsworthy results. So, what about those times when there are no successes to report, no great reasons to celebrate?
Let’s first consider the people who are built for success, the people who have made and lost millions, sometimes many times. They know about success and understand how to view failures as learning points, the necessary drive and vision, the tools needed to grow, thrive and excel. They have the tenacity and resilience to see beyond challenges, rarely considering failure as an option.
These people recognize opportunities to be flexible and reassess the big picture, ready to detour if necessary. They have the mindset and determination to see past any obstacles, and are able to apply that focus again and again.
It is important to reflect that the time spent identifying and developing the skills necessary to succeed is in itself a significant investment in any achievement. Stepping up is the first positive action, showing that you are ready and willing to learn and persevere. So, making that phone call, sending that email, attending that networking event are all important foundations on which to build.
Think about baking a cake. There are many tasks required before the beautiful sweet reward arrives; Shopping for ingredients, making sure you have the necessary kit, knowing what to make, the recipe, how long to bake it all add up to the end result of a delicious cake, and are all mini-successes in their own right.
Being disciplined builds good habits. And even a disastrous outcome can teach us how to do things differently. Having probably moved out of the house this past year, locked in with little work, money and an equally stressed partner or kids, success may just be smiling, brief and ready to go. Mutual support, empathy and understanding are especially important at this time, along with gentle encouragement.
Success often involves learning new ways and skills, being flexible, being adaptable, being a team player when needed, being receptive to different ideas, being willing to delegate when others have more time or expertise. Also, self-care, attention to quality sleep, food, breaks, exercise, need to factor in as well. Doing so is a great way to instill an enthusiastic mindset that focuses on the rewarding end game.
And in business, success may involve outsourcing or hiring other members of staff, although this may initially feel like extra stress rather than exciting success. Hiring someone adds financial overhead and can take you physically away from your business while training and supervising their work. But ultimately an extra team member will free you up for other work or enable you to take time to recharge your batteries, which is a success in itself.
If maintaining focus proves difficult it is important to find ways to work on any underlying issues and problem areas. Using the services of a therapist, business coach or counsellor, meeting with like-minded people who understand and support you, sharing and discussing problems with family, friends or professional groups are all ways to help you find positive ways to manage and cope with stress. .
However, some people may feel stuck, with few options for change, if work has become a thankless environment. Choices are often limited when there are children to care for, wages to earn, friends and family to accommodate. But in those cases people may eventually vote with their feet and walk away. Or suffer from stress and ill health. On average, UK workers take 5.8 sick days each year at a cost of £723.80 per employee or £77.5 billion to the economy.
Management needs to consider the work environment when evaluating employee performance and continued commitment to results and growth. Setting goals that employees feel are relevant and important provides significant benefits to all involved by motivating them to stretch themselves and succeed. Providing such understanding and relevant support.
So, when you feel like you have no success to report, start by giving yourself credit for each small step along the way. Even things like taking a shower, making a phone call, sorting through your inbox, filling out a form can have important consequences in your day. Planting and nurturing seeds, focusing, supporting good habits all encourage your vision on your journey to what success looks like to you.
