Vintage Aluminum Christmas Trees – How to Care for Your Aluminum Christmas Tree

Sought after by collectors today, vintage aluminum Christmas trees were introduced in 1959 by Christmas tree manufacturers, the Aluminum Specialty Company. Soon after their debut, aluminum Christmas trees were quickly introduced by a variety of firms and became a staple of the modern American home during the Yuletide era of the 1960s and ’70s.

Aluminum Christmas trees are distinguished by their design, appearance and elegance. In fact, when the trees were launched, many observers and the manufacturer himself referred to them as “Space Age Christmas Trees.” Silver color, unique structure and appearance made aluminum trees different and more attractive to many people.

Vintage aluminum Christmas trees are most often found in silver, but other colors are also available. If you look at some auctions, you’ll see that rosewoods fetch the highest prices because of their rarity. In addition to pink and silver, trees can also be found in green, blue (awesome!) and red.

Caring for an aluminum Christmas tree

If you decide to get a vintage tree, there are a few things to keep in mind to protect your home and your tree. Remember that the branches of your tree are at least 30 years old or more. You can’t place heavy ornaments on them without tearing the cell. Also, they were never intended to be connected to lights, and it can be dangerous to do so now.

When purchasing your tree, you should try to get a color wheel that spins with it. The color wheel consists of a light bulb with three to four different colored lenses, and when the lights are reflected onto the aluminum branches, your tree appears to change colors as the light rotates. If you can’t find a color wheel at a price you’re willing to pay, don’t worry. Any halogen light directed at the tree will have a nice glow effect. You can pick up a light at your local hardware store and pick up several bulbs in different colors.

If you are buying an aluminum Christmas tree at an online auction, here are a few things to make sure all the branches are intact. Although the “branches” are usually made of steel rods and are therefore durable for life, the strips of aluminum foil that make up the “needles” of the tree are no thicker than paper, so they are very fragile. You want to make sure the auctions have good photos showing the tree after assembly. Also, ideally, the tree you buy should have paper wrappers that protect each branch when the tree is taken apart.

Once your tree is delivered, carefully remove the branches from their wrapping and check for damage and breakage, then place the wrappings in a safe place so you can re-wrap your branches after Christmas. Take your time putting the tree together and be careful not to force branches into holes in the tree trunk. Most of them are made of wood, and if you dig into it, you may end up with a hole that is too loose to hold a branch. So push slowly. If the branch does not fit, try it in another hole.

If you decide to decorate your tree with ornaments, use single light ornaments with wires, not tied garlands, which can damage the tinsel. And be sure to keep your tree indoors. If you visit your front lawn, it will not survive. It probably won’t survive a tree-climbing cat either, so if you have cats that like to climb, I’d wait for them to grow out before putting your precious aluminum tree within reach.

After the holidays are over, carefully remove the decorations you added to the tree and then remove each branch and return it to the wrapping paper. Keep the box in a safe place and make sure nothing else is placed on top of it. There’s no reason why your vintage aluminum Christmas tree shouldn’t last another 30 years if you take care of it.
