How to Make Natural Candles – Choosing the Best Wax For Making Candles at Home

There are several natural waxes to choose from for a homemade candle.

Kerosene can be natural as it is a petroleum based wax which is not very healthy and does not burn cleanly so I think we can eliminate this wax.

Healthy Natural Candle Waxes – Palm, Beeswax and Soy and Ghee.

Let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of each of these waxes.

Palm made from the wax of the fruit of the palm tree. It is white, all natural, renewable and clean burning.

Palm wax has a very attractive unique crystalline structure.

It can hold a very high odor load. Some palm waxes can hold twice as much scent as paraffin or soy wax.

Palm wax comes in granular form, is very easy to work with, and clumps evenly when lit. No additives are needed and cleans up easily with soap and warm water.

Disadvantages of palm wax; palm wax costs a little more than soy wax.

When it comes to making soy candles, this wax also has many advantages. It burns for a long time, cool and clean.

Below is a list of benefits that the manufacturer gives about soy wax:

o Made from pure, 100% natural soy

o Longer, cooler and cleaner burn without build-up

o Made in the USA with local crops

o Manufactured without genetically modified ingredients

o Manufactured to meet FDA and Kosher standards

o Easy to clean by removing solvents with soap and hot water

o Renewable sustainable resources that plant growth requires

o Biodegradable and free of pesticides and herbicides

o Highly stable for long life

o Does not undergo animal testing

Disadvantages of shadow candles:

Some manufacturers claim that soy candles are made without genetically modified material. For most soy waxes, this is only true because after processing, there is no DNA left in the wax to assess whether the soybeans used are GMO or not. In 2002, 98 percent of the soybean crop in the United States was mixed with genetically modified (GMO) or non-GMO soybeans. The only reliable sources of non-GMO soy are Identity Preserved or Certified Organic, which are few and far between. This means that buying Identity Preserved or certified non-organic soy wax supports the biotech industry. This is the downside of soy wax in my opinion. I also feel that soy candles made from GMO soybeans cannot be called “natural” because their DNA has been altered by humans, the fact that the DNA was later removed does not negate that.

Let’s take a look at wax, which has been used for candles since ancient times.

It burns slowly and cleanly and has a unique aroma.

It gives more light and heat than other waxes and is almost drip free.

Beeswax is the only fuel that emits negative ions when burned, and this process cleans the air of positive ions such as dust, odors, toxins, pollen, mold, dust mite droppings, and viruses.

Burning a beeswax candle inspires a spiritual feeling; they have traditionally been the candle of choice in many churches.

Using a sheet of beeswax and wrapping it with a stick inside is a very simple way to start making candles, scissors being the only equipment needed. Making beeswax candles with sheets is child’s play.

Poured beeswax candles are as easy to make as candles made from other waxes.

One of the disadvantages of beeswax is that it costs a lot more than other waxes, but this is balanced by its quality, which burns more slowly and lasts longer than other waxes. Beeswax can be added to other waxes to increase the burning time. Beeswax candles have their own natural fragrance, with which only certain aromas mix well. Beeswax can be purchased in yellow or white. Some white beeswax may be bleached and have chemicals added, best to check with the supplier.

Bayberry wax is an aromatic green plant wax that is extracted from the Bayberry surface by boiling the berries in water and peeling the wax from the surface. Lighting a bayberry candle on the holiday is a 300-year-old tradition that is supposed to bring good luck in the coming year. Bayberry wax is only recommended for making painted branches and may not burn as well as prayer, tea or pillar candles.

Bayberry wax costs 4 times more than wax. It takes 15 pounds of Bayberries to make one pound of wax. It has a warm, earthy scent reminiscent of freshly cut hay and dries down to a lovely olive green color. Small amounts can be added to other waxes to make them harder and give them a green color. It is professional because there are no other natural colorants for candles except the yellow color of beeswax. All natural candles, that is, all-natural candles, are white in color unless beeswax or bayberry wax is added to them.

Ghee lamps have been traditionally used by Sikhs and Hindus as a spiritual practice for thousands of years. Shining light dispels darkness and brings comfort, hope and peace. Lighting a lamp with cow fat is said to bring especially brightness and heavenly bliss, prosperity, health and happiness.

Ghee is made from unsalted clarified butter. It’s easy to make at home or you can buy it at the grocery store. Organic ghee is available. Once one has learned how to make a container candle, it is possible to make an oil candle. Attaching the stick to the center of the container without glue is the trick. Traditionally, the place to hold the butter is clay, silver, gold or brass, never stainless steel. The wick is traditionally placed at the bottom of the pot and is placed on the side of the lamp, rather than directly in the middle. I bought a butter candle made in a small glass jar with a center stick lid and it works well. I would be very careful about attaching the rod to the side of the bottle. Ghee is very soft at room temperature and liquid when heated, so it needs a container. My ghee candle burns without a greasy smell and gives a very sweet sensation. Now that I know how to put out a jar, I can keep the candle fresh by adding oil and a stick, or I can make a larger candle that burns longer for the same price as my store bought candle.

Don’t let what material you use for your candle hold you back from deciding which wax to make! Choose wax and make candles, it’s fun, you can save money, and using candles brings happiness.
