My Las Vegas Review

I recently took ten days off and went to Las Vegas! This was my sixth trip in the last three years. In my last 6 visits, I think I’ve found some great places to gamble and sleep – so I’m posting this as an official Las Vegas review.

If you have never been to Las Vegas or haven’t been there in 2 years, this review will be useful for you. The city is constantly changing and growing. I love playing Texas Holdem poker online, but after playing for a while every day, it’s nice to get away. And it’s nice to be able to have such a good vacation. Before I became an online poker player as a profession, I would never have dreamed of going to Vegas for ten days and staying at one of the most beautiful hotels in the world – The Venetian.

Transportation

On my first trip to Vegas, we didn’t rent a car. We took a shuttle from the airport to the hotel for $8 and walked or took buses/taxis the rest of the trip. We have since rented a car. If you’re in the middle of the week or in the offseason, it’s very cheap to rent a car in Vegas. We never paid more than $25 a day. When you add the cost of taxis and buses, renting a car seems more reasonable.

If you are a timid driver, be careful, people drive like maniacs there! If you’d rather exercise than shuttle, this might be your best bet. Buses run up and down the line every 10 minutes and there are many free monorail trams between the many casinos on the line.

My recommendation is to rent a car and bring a few singles and have it serviced. If you are like me, you want to see all the beautiful casinos. There’s nothing better than driving up to the front door and parking it. I usually wish a couple of bucks. Otherwise, you can park in the parking lot for free.

Hotels

On my most recent vacation, I was with my friend Kurt. Below are some pictures of our Venetian hotel. I highly recommend staying here if you can. It was the best hotel I have ever been to. The bathroom was very large, with a jacuzzi tub, two sinks, a separate shower, a separate toilet with a telephone, marble floors.

Our room

The Venetian and the Bellagio are two of the best hotels in Las Vegas. They are expensive. I have been to many hotels in Vegas and it all depends on what you want out of your vacation. Most people gamble and drink until the wee hours of the morning, so the hotel won’t matter much. If you want to stay at the cheapest hotel and be close to the gambling, I recommend staying downtown. I stayed at the Downtown Las Vegas Club last year. In the middle of the week, you can get a room for $35-$45 a night. On that trip we only got about 10 hours of sleep in the 3 nights we were there, so the hotel wasn’t that important.

However, the Las Vegas club was very nice, the rooms were very big, there was a couch. I’ve stayed at other hotels in the city center and most of them are in this price range and more expensive during weekends and peak season. So if you want to be pampered and stay in a nice place, find a hotel on the way – the Venetian and the Belagio are very nice and very expensive. MGM or Luxor or New York are reasonably priced.. If you want to go cheap, stay downtown.

Drinks

PERFECT if you like to gamble and drink – Drinks are free if you gamble. So don’t spend $8 at the bar, hit the tables or the slot, and drink at home.

Gambling

I used to gamble in many casinos in Vegas. I think we hit most of them in the last 10 days of vacation. My suggestion for gambling is all about advantage and cash. On weekends and peak times, it’s hard to find a blackjack table with a $5 line minimum. Most are ten dollars and up. So if you’re on a budget, I suggest gambling downtown. They have a five dollar table and even a three dollar table. They also have single deck and double deck blackjack games downtown for lower limits. We have found that most casinos on the line use automatic shufflers and 6+ decks- This creates very bad odds. This trip I mostly played blackjack. I consider online poker my profession and I needed to take some time off since I was on vacation. So I mostly played blackjack and horses.

Some must-see casinos are Venetians, shops and Venetian canals, and there are beautiful paintings and works of art. In addition, Belagio is a wonderful casino, they have a front water show set to music. If you want to bet on horses or sports, I recommend the sportsbook at Belagio. They have leather chairs with personal flat screen TV’s and they have plenty of cocktail waitresses serving drinks. We spent a lot of time here.

Food

Where to eat? We ate so much on this trip, I must have gained 20 pounds… Let’s start with the buffets:

The best buffet I’ve ever had was the Spice Market Buffet at Aladdin Casino. It was about $25 and the food was amazing. They had different categories of food, American, Mexican, etc. Everything I tasted was delicious. Their fruit was fresh and their desserts were amazing. I highly recommend this buffet.

Another great buffet is the buffet at the Belagio. This buffet was very close to the Spice Market buffet in terms of price and taste. I highly recommend this if you love seafood. They also have Beef Wellingtion, Prime Rib and Colby Beef, very tasty.

The biggest buffet has to be the one in Rio, The Carnival World Buffet. This buffet was $25-$30. It had a great selection, but I was not impressed with the food.

The worst buffet we ever had was breakfast at Bally’s buffet. The food wasn’t too bad. Orange juice tasted like Tang.

Meals outside the buffet

A burger?

The best burger has to be at The Burger Bar at Mandalay Bay. they have Colby Beef burgers that aren’t cheap. About $16, but it was so good.

Want a great steak? The best steak I had in Vegas was at Alan Alberts. This is a very good restaurant, great service, great food. Pricey, but worth it if you’re looking for a mouth-watering steak. 3763 Las Vegas Blvd

Italian food

Craving great Italian food in a cool old school restaurant? Try Batista’s Hole in the Wall. The walls of the restaurant are covered with autographs of famous people. They even have an accordionist who walks from table to table. The food is amazing. Meals come with your choice of wine, salad, entree and complimentary cappuccino. I had the chicken and it was very good. It was around $20-$25 per meal.

Cheap food

Lost all your cash on the tables? There are great deals on dining throughout Vegas. Kurt and tried most of them. If you are looking for luxury food, skip this section!

At the Upperdeck of the Las Vegas Club downtown – We had a New York steak, eggs, hashbrowns and toast for $2.95!!! And it was actually pretty good.

Another great one is Prime Rib in San Remos across from the MGM. You get bread, salad, ribs, baked potato, vegetables for $5.95. The prime rib slice was very thin, but well worth the $6.

Another inexpensive meal we’ve had a few times is the Steak and Lobster dinner at Careful Kities in downtown El Cortez. It was like $10 and was pretty good.

Bars and clubs

Want to hit the clubs? One of my favorites is the Ghost Bar at the top of the Palms Casino. They filmed MTV’s Real World Las Vegas at the Palms, and the cast frequented Ghost Bar. Its part is located on top of the building. The view of the line is amazing. Mostly a younger crowd.

The tangerine at Treasure Island was also very good. You can go outside, also with a view of the line and the Pirate show.

If you’re out of cash and still want a drink – head to the sportsbook. Kurt has perfected this method! Grab a program and a seat and wait for the cocktail waitress to arrive. Tip him and he’ll come back!
