Five Tips to Present Effortlessly
“I don’t like your attitude” – shouted my school teacher, kicked me out of the class and demanded to go to the head coach. He gave me a full dressing down and I vowed to improve my attitude to school from then on.
Having the right attitude, or the right state of mind, is essential for anyone practicing or speaking in public. Here are six tips on how.
Remove all worries
Remove all worries from your head. We all have some kind of burden on our heads. A long-lasting quarrel with your spouse, a big mistake you made last night or losing a deal – all this can affect your mental state. The trick is to accept it and clear your head so you can focus on the present.
One of Dandy Warhol’s favorite numbers talks about having a trap door behind my head. I use this metaphor before going on stage to release all the thoughts that keep me down. It’s working.
On the subject of Dundee Warhol, let’s dive into music and its effect on your state of mind. I’m listening to my State Changer playlist on my phone as I type this. This playlist consists of a number of songs, tunes and tracks from my collection, each of which controls and influences my state of mind. I’m 33,000 feet above the Himalayas presented in Bangladesh and I’m just craving an energy boost so I’m listening to my playlist.
Music is the anchor. Listening can bring back the state of mind you experienced when you listened to the track or later incorporated into the tune. Anchors do that. Anchors can be anything – hearing something, seeing an image in your head, a physical touch on your body, a smell or a taste. All of them will restore the state of mind for you.
Collect anchors for each state you need. I use my playlist because it has the ability to instantly change the state and I love my tunes. I’m listening now “I am the resurrection” Voted number 10 guitar tune by Q Magazine from The Stone Roses. It excites me, so I can go out in front of an audience and be ‘big’ to them.
My playlist includes:
- Raven by the Stranglers for extra energy
- Good morning Britain By Aztec Camera for inspiration
- Such a Day by Elbow for concentration
- Nothing in my way For Perseverance by Keane
- Glory days by Pulp for encouragement
You can see it differently.
In 2016, I visited a private medical facility because I applied for additional health insurance. The doctor was good, very good, and half way through he told me “Lose the stone” without any emotion or prejudice.
That year, I lost 25 pounds, continued to go to the gym, but began to gain weight and tone up a bit. Boy did that change how I felt during this presentation. This meant that all my clothes were a lot more roomy and felt very comfortable.
It’s important to be physically comfortable, loose fitting clothes will help, but learn to keep a good posture. I call it a firm stance. Make sure that your body is perfectly balanced, do not lean on both legs, feet are shoulder-width apart, slightly apart. Girls will get rid of your graduation poses. Balanced, standing straight, shoulders back – just like your mother used to say before going to school.
Breathing to thrive is not just to survive, was a phrase I heard at the annual conference of the Professional Public Speaking Association. Breathing is not just survival; it can affect your mental state. I will continue the story of my previous personal doctor.
He asked me to lie down on the couch and he proceeded to take my blood pressure. I must admit I was a bit nervous then, you see I am a big baby. After taking the first step, he told me to calm down and told me that there was no way to submit this blood pressure to the insurance company, they would deny my claim.
I thought how can I relax. I remembered to breathe. Take a deep breath and exhale very slowly, slowly. I did this for a minute and he took my blood pressure again. “It’s better, it’s more normal”
I breathed a sigh of relief.
So, if you’re feeling a little nervous and your blood pressure is rising, do a few minutes of breathing techniques before you go on stage and it will calm you down, lower your heart rate and put you in a more relaxed state. – presenter status.
Enter the room
The goal here is to be one with the group. You do this as your speech continues, but at the beginning you adjust your peripheral vision to achieve the desired position. Many presenters use their foveal vision and focus on a specific location; It has no value to be one with the room. Instead, choose a location, but deliberately increase your environmental awareness by paying attention to everything around you. This will train your brain to use your peripheral vision as you begin your speech, thereby covering the entire audience.
Usually someone introduces me on stage – it takes 20 seconds or so. I usually stand at the back of the introducer, ready to jump, but when he’s introducing me, I focus on him, but let my peripheral vision cast its spell on the entire room and any audience members I can.
When I start my speech, my brain is in peripheral mode and this allows me to connect with them. Then I relax the periphery and make sure I make eye contact with as many people as possible. Eyes are the windows of the soul, let’s never forget that.
By the way, a little trade secret for you. Focusing on your peripheral vision will relieve your nerves. Not many people know this.
The bigger the audience, the bigger the applause you’ll get after your entry and the harder you’ll have to work to gain control. Here it is:
Peripheral eye contact around the room
Breathe and take a firm position, be balanced and calm
Now the audience can relax
A tape in my ear from the director fixed my attitude years ago. Hey, can’t you do that anymore? Or a cane that has endured twice, leaving ugly bruises over the centuries. The world hasn’t changed, but presenting to an audience always requires you to be in the right state of mind.
